Mount Vesuvius eruption

In the first century Pompeii was one of only so many cities around Mount Vesuvius.It was a prosperous city and flourishing agriculture region,Of the other towns it was largest.Pompeii’s neighboring community and town was Herculaneum,which was burned and the skeletons of inhabitants only remain.

Pliny the younger wrote a firsthand account of the Vesuvius eruption,in which he lost his uncle.It was said to be especially traumatic for him.This account remains to date the most detailed of all writings.

It is believed universally that the eruption was August 24 79 A.D. Yet controversy lingers as plaster moulds appear to be of people wearing winter clothes,while preserved plants show pumpkins and other October fruits and vegetables,summer plants were being sold and sun dried.Such archeological evidence would point to spring.

Today Pompeii attracts over 2 million visitors a year and is most visited in Italy,being also declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2007. To combat tourist pollution,other town sites like Herculaneum are now available.
